Energistics Announces Publication of Unit of Measure Standard Version 1.0

Unit of Measure Standard

Energistics is pleased to announce the publication of Version 1.0 of the Unit of Measure Standard, which includes the Unit of Measure Dictionary and the Unit Symbol Grammar Specification. This standard is a harmonization of several industry UOM standards, including: POSC Unit of Measure V2.2, RP66 and OpenSpirit®. In addition, PPDM™ and SEG contributed to the development.

The goal of the Unit of Measure Standard V1.0 is to provide the necessary components and guidelines to improve accuracy and consistency of implementation, usage, exchange and conversion of units of measure related to all upstream activities. The units in this standard are intended to be those used by the industry or which reasonably would be expected to be encountered.

The Energistics Unit of Measure Work Group generated the unit names, symbols, derived units and conversion factors with an eye towards the ability to easily implement it in software and databases, but not so much for other uses like writing academic papers. There are other resources – like NIST 811:2008 – to aid in preparing manuscripts.

Energistics wishes to thank its member community, the Professional Petroleum Data Management (PPDM) Association and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) for their contributions to this standard.
